Unleashed

I don't care how docile your dog is, in public areas, with little children, other people and other animals, keep your dog on a leash!! I'd say in this case, a noncompliant dog owner should have expected this outcome. Not to mention, the dog was a pitbull! I don't blame that Park Police officer one bit for protecting himself and others. Leash your dogs!

"not to mention the dog was a pitbull" - obviously you don't know pits very well.
I don't think a dog should be offleash either - but shooting it? I believe there are other methods.
BTW - I have my dog on leash whenever I'm around people and I can't tell you how many little kids coming running up and stick their arm in my dog's face. Of course, since pits were also called nursemaid or nanny dogs because they are so good with children, my pitbull Honey just does her thing - rolls on her back or licks their feet and ears. I always try and tell the children to be careful because you never know - Honey has been attacked twice by the same off-leash Yorkie (no apology from the owner either time, by the way.)

Nope - I don't! But unfortunately, there are plenty of stories about them from this area. None of them good. Even leashed dogs can be dangerous (not talking about pitbulls specifically here), as was demonstrated in our neighborhood. New neighbors had a Rottweiler that attacked another neighbor's dog in their yard - owner was walking the dog on a leash, other unleashed dog had an electric fence (I'm not a big fan of those, either!). The Rottweiler months later got loose, went into another neighbor's home, found their dog and carried it around their house by the neck. That Rottweiler was euthanized. I think the issue is whether the dog owner has control. This man was repeated asked to put a leash on his dog and refused - why? I just think if you are going to count on the police to keep everyone safe, you can't expect them to not react when they feel threatened. Maybe shooting the dog wasn't the best idea, but with only a split second to think about it... If the police ask you to leash your dog, do it!

Thanks for keeping yours on a leash! And I know about the kids. We always make our dog loving daughter ask the own before petting. Owners tend to know if their dogs can be trusted with children - but not always!
