A Nutty Situation

I've blogged in the past about reactions to peanut restrictions in schools, churches, etc. Here is a very interesting article about nut allergy panic or hysteria. Good information, reasonable responses to nut allergies based on age groups. I like that the researchers mentioned either have children with nut allergies or are allergic themselves. Lends a bit of credence to the article. Enjoy!

Interesting article, and seems reasonable.

I think a lot depends upon just how allergic a child is. If I were the parent of a severely (life-threatening) peanut allergic child, I might consider home schooling during the pre-school years...depending upon the school's rules.

Well, I'm totally in agreement with this article. Pre-schools can easily be nut free, especially if they are half day - no meals. My girls went to a peanut free school where snacks were provided by parents. It's easy to bring in grapes, apples, teddy grahams... long list of acceptable snacks. At that age, it's just better. Once kids get to elementary school, having designated peanut free tables for students and parents who wish is an option, but I would imagine that most would not, as has happened at our school. The offer was made, but nobody wanted it. So far, there has not been a peanut allergy reaction - although I'd hate for that to happen! I do think there are situations where it's taken to an extreme... unfortunately!

You know my allergy-ridden family members... But the more pertinent thing that I wanted to say is that Dr. Robert Wood treated both Olivia and Josh. Does this make us semi-famous? Along with his 1,998 other patients?

You are SO famous! Right here on my blog, anyway! ;-)
